EU Chamber of Commerce in China issues mixed progress report

Brussels, 20/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 19 September, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson met a delegation in Brussels from the EU Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC), led by EUCCC President Joerg Wuttke, who presented the Commissioner with the EUCCC's European Business in China Position Paper 2007/8, which is in fact a progress report on European business in China in 2006. The positive trends noted in the report include the fact that EU-China trade grew by 21% in 2006 to more than €250 billion and EU investment in China reached more than €3.7 billion. The report welcomes large-scale economic reforms in most sectors and the promulgation of new legislation, including China's first anti-monopoly law and new patent laws. The EUCCC hails China's first steps at energy saving and emission reductions and new emission standards for Chinese vehicles. Among the negative aspects listed in the report is the emerging trend within some regulatory bodies towards unequal treatment of foreign companies through protectionist measures. It raises strong concerns about the continued lack of effective deterrence against infringements of intellectual property rights, particularly at local level. The report also regrets the continued limitations on investment in certain industries such as automotive, telecoms, petrochemicals and energy, and the technical barriers to trade and investment still placed in the way of foreign companies in China.
