Brussels, 20/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - “At the end of the year, we shall publish a communication setting out our concerns” about implementation of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), said Internal Market Commissioner McCreevy speaking in Paris on Tuesday 18 September during a conference of the European Financial Management & Marketing Association (EFMA). The Commission has three fears. Firstly, it is concerned about there being a delay in implementing the SEPA project. “The uncertainty surrounding the SEPA could easily become an excuse for delaying migration” of national payment systems to a European system, said McCreevy. Secondly, “this is what happens with national credit cards”, he said, fearing a concentration of operators and more expensive payment cards. The commissioner also spoke of the “risk” that the optional provision of additional services (e.g. electronic invoices) might lead to further “fragmentation” and restrict “economies of scale and productivity gains”.
