Russian energy giant Gazprom to join debate about regulation of the energy sector in the EU

Brussels, 20/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - Indirectly targeted by the safeguard measures introduced by the European Commission in its newly unveiled draft third package of legislation on the internal market in Europe (see EUROPE 9505) - to avoid energy operators from outside the EU getting the upper hand on the EU energy market - Russian energy giant Gazprom has reacted to the publication of the new legislative proposals. In a press release, Sergei Kupriyanov, chief spokesman for Gazprom, said: 'Gazprom is a reliable gas supplier to the European Union and a major investor in the infrastructure which brings gas to Europe. We share the EU's core goal of ensuring long-term security of energy to the EU. After studying very carefully the European Commission's energy package… Gazprom will present its evaluation… Gazprom has an important contribution to make to the debate about regulation of the energy sector in Europe and feels certain that its voice will be heard.'
