Strasbourg, 12/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in Darfur. This resolution condemned the blatant violation of the United Nations arms embargo by the Sudanese government, and called on EU member states to immediately introduce stricter control and verification procedures to ensure compliance with the United Nations Security Council resolution of 30 July 2004. The EP said a military no-fly zone should be established over Darfur and called on the EU and other international players to apply targeted sanctions against all parties, including the government, which break the ceasefire or which attack civilians, the peace-keeping forces or humanitarian operations. MEPs also called on the Sudanese government to arrest Humanitarian Affairs Minister Ahmed Mohammed Harun and militia leader Janjaouites Ali Kushayb, who are suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and to surrender them to the International Criminal Court. The EP also called on the EU and other international donors to provide additional emergency humanitarian aid. It called on China to end its export of arms to Sudan and to stop blocking UN Security Council decisions on sanctions targeted against the Sudanese government. (hb)
