Brussels, 12/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission, on 10 July, opened an in-depth investigation into the proposed acquisition by US technology group Syniverse of the wireless business of its competitor, the BSG Group, a company with global activities in a range of wireless and wireline communication services. With the proposed transaction, the number of competitors active in Europe on the market for clearing services for roaming data would be reduced from three to two. These services act as clearing houses between mobile network operators, allowing billing for and therefore facilitating roaming by end users. In its in-depth investigation, the Commission will investigate whether the proposed merger and the subsequent concentration in this market would be likely to lead to higher prices and lower quality for data clearing services. The Commission now has 90 working days (until 16 November 2007) to take a final decision. (cd)
