Brussels mini plenary session focuses on future EU Treaty, Russia, Middle East and human rights

Brussels, 04/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's plenary mini-session to be held on Wednesday and Thursday (6 and 7 June) in Brussels will focus on institutional issues and international policy. EU institutional reform (future Treaty) will be the main subject under discussion. This subject will open the session with debate on the Brok-Baron Crespo report and will crop up again during discussions on preparations for the June European Council. “Technical” subjects on the agenda include reports on the status of the artist and on the Visa Information System (VIS). Finally, the Brussels session will be marked by the welcome given to the new Bulgarian MEPs elected on 20 May this year, and whose official mandate starts on the same day as the mini-session. Details of the agenda follow:

Wednesday (starting 15: 00): - Discussion on report by Enrique Baron Crespo (PES, Spain) and Elmar Brok (EPP-ED, Germany) on the continuation of the EU's constitutional process; - declaration by Javier Solana, high representative for the Middle East (EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering was on a lengthy trip to the region last week); - Council and Commission declarations on the United Nations Council of Human Rights (Geneva 11-19 June); - one-minute addresses; - joint discussion on cross-border cooperation on JHA (fight against terrorism and crime): two reports by Sarah Ludford (ALDE, UK) will be discussed on the Visa Information System (VIS), as well as a report by Fausto Correia (PES, Portugal) on the Prüm Treaty and a report by Martine Roure (PES, France) on the protection of personal data; - a debate on the report by Claire Gibault (ALDE, france) on the social status of the artist; - a debate on the report by Jan Andersson (PES, Sweden) on a sample survey of labour forces in the EU; - debate on the report by Zdzislaw Kazimierz Chmielewski (EPP-ED, Poland) on the multi-annual plan for rebuilding cod stocks in the Baltic Sea and on the fishing industry using such stocks; - debate on the report by Ville Itälä (EPP-ED, Finland) on the European Parliament's budgetary receipts and outgoings for 2008; - and a debate on the report by Maria Isabel Salinas Garcia (PES, Spain) on rules tailored to the fruit and vegetable sector.

Thursday (from 9: 30): Council and Commission declarations on preparing the European Council scheduled for 21-22 June and on the state of progress in reviewing the treaties.

At 11: 00: Voting will be held on the reports discussed the day before, as well as on the following reports: - Jacek Saryusz-Wolski (EPP-ED, Poland) on the protocol to the EU/Russia partnership and cooperation agreement; - Karin Scheele (Austria, PES) on the addition of vitamins, mineral substances and certain other substances in foodstuffs; - Adriana Poli Bortone (UEN, Italy) on nutritional and health claims on food; - Luis Manuel Capoulas Santos (PES, Portugal) on safeguarding and implementing measures applicable in the North-West Atlantic Fisheries Organisation's area of regulation; - Carlos Coelho (EPP-ED, Portugal) on application of Schengen provisions to the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia; - James Elles (EPP-ED, UK) on draft correcting budgets No2/2007 and No3/2007 (2006 surplus); - and Reimer Böge (EPP-ED, Germany) on mobilisation of the Solidarity Fund (flooding in Hungary and Greece).
