23/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 23 May, at its 57th World Congress, the International Union of Public transport (UITP) set up its fifth regional division, devoted to relations with Eurasia. This division will promote the public transport sector through seminars and conferences organised to suit the specific needs of each region. In line with the Union's rules, this new UITP branch will comprise the Eurasian Assembly, which will bring together all the members from the region at least once per year, and the Eurasian executive committee, which will have responsibility for planning and setting up the division's activities. In addition to the capitals of the 12 former Soviet states belonging to the Commonwealth of Independent States, the division will also cooperate with Moscow, for example on developing the underground system.
