Brussels, 23/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - the Congress of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has elected its new leadership for the next four years, with, for the first time, a woman, Wanja Lundby Wedin, who heads the Swedish union LO, elected president, gaining 91% of the votes. She replaces Spaniard Candido Mendez Rodrigues. Following her election, the new president undertook to build a stronger European trade union movement as the first priority of her presidency.
The Congress re-elected the entire outgoing secretariat: (1) secretary general - John Monks (United Kingdom); (2) deputy secretaries general - Maria Helena Andre (Portugal) and Reiner Hoffmann (Germany); (3) confederal secretaries - Walter Cerfeda (Italy), Joël Decaillon (France), Jozef Niemiec (Poland) and Catelene Passchier (Netherlands).
