Meeting of European economic area council

Brussels, 15/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Council for the European Economic Area (EEA) met on Tuesday at a foreign affairs ministerial level to draw up a balance sheet on how the agreement is working overall. This agreement brings EU member states and three of the four current members of EFTA (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) together. Many points were raised, including the annual 2006 report from the European Free Trade Association presented last week (EUROPE 9424). In the conclusions adopted on Tuesday, the EEA Council welcomed the raft of measures on integrated climate and energy policy adopted by the European Council last March, as well as the progress made in the take up of the acquis for a whole range of fields (food safety, veterinary legislation, greenhouse gas emissions trading system, free movement of goods and services etc). The Council also recognised the importance of inviting EEA/EFTA ministers to participate in informal but relevant meetings of the EU, as well as in some ministerial conferences. (ab)
