THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/russia

28/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in a column in Le monde on Wednesday that European unification is in Russia's interest, as it allows for a multipolar world to be created in which both Europe and Russia have their place. Putin also declared that: “A stable prosperous and united Europe is in our interest. We consider European integration as a logical process in the integral part of an emerging multipolar world order. It is therefore important for us that the EU becomes an increasingly competent and influential centre in the political world, and provides a major contribution to regional and global security”. Moscow wants to base its relations with the EU on conventional principles and a strategic partnership, explained Mr Putin. The Russian president affirmed: “In this context, I support the formula of Russia/EU relations established by Romano Prodi”. The president also asserted that his country completely shared the values and principles of the EU. (hb)
