Brussels, 27/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - A declaration of the presidency of the EU published on Monday indicated that the German presidency of the Council, “strongly supports the proposal put forward by President Ahtisaari., which aims to “foster the building of a multi-ethnic, democratic society in Kosovo based on the rule of law”. The declaration explains that the EU Special Envoy's plan for Kosovo, which will be debated at the UN Security Council, contains “wide-ranging provisions intended to secure the future of all communities in Kosovo, including notably the Kosovo Serbs”. In the absence of a result from the year long negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, “The presidency of the European Union believes that the proposal is a fair and balanced compromise that points the way forward”. The European position is backed by the USA (EUROPE 9394) and “lays the foundation for sustainable economic and political development in Kosovo and will enhance stability throughout the region”. The position is counting on the Security Council to “live up to its responsibility and hopes that it will endorse the proposal in a timely manner”. (ab)
