Olli Rehn supports Martti Ahtisaari's “realistic compromise”, noting failure of negotiated solution

Brussels, 12/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - Welcoming the efforts of Martti Ahtisaari, Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn gave his support to the United Nations special envoy for Kosovo who plans to present his final proposal on the status of Kosovo to the United Nations Security Council in March. The current text is a “realistic compromise, given the parties' irreconcilable positions on Kosovo's status”, said Olli Rehn on 10 March after the last discussions in Vienna between the representatives of Kosovo and Serbia. Mr Ahtisaari had said earlier that “there is no common ground between the two parties”. Without a negotiated position from the parties, it will be up to the Security Council to settle the matter on the basis of Mr Ahtisaari's text, which provides a “framework for a future stable, democratic and multi-ethnic Kosovo”, said Mr Rehn, hoping that an agreement will be “anchored in a clear European perspective, so as to enhance stability in Kosovo and in the wider region”. For Pristina, Mr Ahtisaari's plan, which provides for broad sovereignty under international surveillance, must lead to independence. This is an unacceptable solution for Serbia, whose outgoing prime minister, Vojislav Kostunica, warned on Saturday that a vote on this text at the UN would be brutal “violation of the United Nations Charter” on the sovereignty of states. No date has been set for the Security Council vote but all eyes are turned to Russia, which has on several occasions repeated that it would only approve a solution that has received the go-ahead from Belgrade and Pristina.
