12/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - In an interview published on Saturday in the Bild am Sonntag, European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said he favoured a speed limit on German motorways to help combat climate change. He said, “Speed limits make good sense” for several reasons and are quite normal in most EU countries and the United States. “It's only in Germany that they are the subject of controversy,” he said, causing general outcry in the country. German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel said that Mr Dimas was not aware of the facts, namely that a reduction in the motorway speed limit to 100 km/h would reduce CO² emissions by only 0.6%. (ol)
