Brussels, 12/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - As intelligence services fear a wave of Al-Qaeda attacks in Europe, the first meeting of the “international network of anti-terrorist magistrates” was held in Paris on 8 March, gathering around fifty senior magistrates from nine countries. Professionals like Jean-Louis Bruguière of France and Baltasar Garzon of Spain were present. The aim of the meeting was to speed up the pace of international cooperation in this field. Representatives were sent by Indonesia and Morocco in addition to France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Opening the meeting, Minister of Justice Pascal Clément expressed the hope that this Paris network would become a “light and permanent structure for discussion on counter-terrorism problems”. During the meeting, the magistrates first of all tackled centralisation of prosecution, investigation and judgement of acts of terrorism. The “Paris Group” may be opened to other countries in the future. (bc)
