19/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on Monday 19 February, Michael Glos, German Minister for the Economy and Technology, said they had tackled the highly controversial issue of postal services. Despite opposition, he said, “we should be able to find a satisfactory system for the funding of the universal service”. In their conclusions, European economy ministers felt that greater liberalisation of the European postal markets - ensuring funding of an effective universal service - would contribute to enhancing the internal market against international competition. Belgium, Luxembourg and France asked how the universal postal service could be effectively funded. Wishing to annex a declaration to the minutes of the meeting, Belgium also rejected any wording that might prejudge future discussions on this dossier in Council. (mb)
