Commission takes Poland to Court of Justice for discrimination against second-hand imported cars

Brussels, 21/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the European Commission decided to bring Poland before the European Court of Justice for discriminating against imported cars. Technical tests prior to the registration of imported used cars are required. These tests are much more demanding than those for cars already registered in the country, which are not required if identical cars of the same age, model or type, change hands. The Commission considers that the Polish measure cannot be justified since it is neither necessary nor proportionate to the objectives claimed by the Polish authorities - the protection of public order, public health and the environment.
