Brussels, 21/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU expresses concern about the media situation in Azerbaijan, where many cases of harassment, arbitrary detention, court cases and violence against independent journalists as well as opposition figures have been reported. In a declaration published on Wednesday, the EU notes “with concern the recent developments affecting the freedom of media in Azerbaijan”. It calls on the Azerbaijan government to create an environment in which the media can work freely, effectively and without fear. The EU stresses that the measures to limit the freedom of the media in Azerbaijan run counter to the spirit and purpose of the recently adopted ENP (European Neighbourhood Policy) Action Plan and of the EU-Azerbaijan Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. The decision to allow the radio and television channel, ANS, to resume broadcasting, pending resolution of outstanding regulatory issues, is “a positive step”, the EU notes. It goes on to underline the importance of “resolving outstanding regulatory issues so that a strong and independent media sector can flourish in Azerbaijan”. (ab)
