Commission launches consultation procedure on possible applications of future European satellite navigation system

Brussels, 06/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is due to adopt the Green Paper on future applications of Galileo, the European satellite navigation system. The aim is to launch a discussion on what the public sector can do to create an appropriate policy and legal framework to support the development of applications of the system, once it is fully operational. The Green Paper provides a non-exhaustive list of possible applications for the services offered by Galileo (the governmental Public Regulated Service - PRS - does not fall within the scope of the Green Paper): emergency calls and locator services, road and rail transport, the maritime and fisheries sector, aviation, civil protection and humanitarian aid, the transport of dangerous goods and livestock, agriculture, the energy sector, search and rescue. The Commission says that, in September 2007, it will present an analysis of the results of the public debate, along with an action plan containing the practical measures to be proposed from 2008. Alongside this public debate, the Commission is also launching a competition for young people in the 15-25 age range to find the most innovative ideas for the use of satellite navigation technologies and services (more information at: http://www.galileo.eu/contest ). On 8 December, the Commission could also adopt a draft request for a brief to negotiate and conclude cooperation agreements between third countries and the Galileo Supervisory Authority. (dt)
