15/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - Andrew Duff MEP (ALDE, United Kingdom) declared in the FT.com on 14 November that President Barroso had not used the designation of Commissioner candidates Meglena Kuneva from Bulgaria and Leonard Orban from Romania to proceed to “a larger reshuffle of his team at the mid-way stage of its mandate”. The British Liberal Democrat said that, “the addition of these two newcomers raises the question, once again, about the size and shape of the Commission. There are certainly not 27 jobs of equal importance to go round, or, indeed, of sufficient importance each to justify an annual salary of €220,000. According to Duff, if José Manuel Barroso had seized the occasion to “adapt the structure of the college”, he would have given the other institutions “a powerful signal…about the Commission's autonomy and efficacy”. Mr Duff said that one way of giving the Commission greater scope could have been the creation of teams led by “four vice-presidents in the fields of external relations, economic policy, internal market and justice and home affairs”.
