APEC calls for Round to be relaunched

Brussels, 15/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - There were multiple appeals for Doha negotiations to be relaunched this Wednesday in Hanoi, where the 18th ministerial meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum is being held, until 16 November. "All the ministers expressed a sense of urgency", said WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy, who attended the meeting in Hanoi. "The governments have understood that failure was an option", he added. The head of Australian diplomacy, Alexander Downer, and American Trade Representative, Susan Schwab, said that salvaging the round was an absolute priority. "There is not a single country or group of countries which can put the Doha Round back on track on its own", said Ms Schwab, who went on to state that only a movement of "all of the key players together, developed and developing countries alike, wanting to go beyond their position of last July" would be able to do this. Ms Schwab also admitted that the EU and the United States in particular should do more in terms of reducing agricultural subsidies. The EU, which did not attend the APEC meeting, joined in with the debate from a distance. From Singapore, the Director-General of the European Commission's DG Trade, David O'Sullivan, described the hypothesis of a breakdown in discussions as a "tragedy", while stating that he was confident that the G6 (EU, United States, Brazil, India, Australia and Japan) would be able to reach a compromise next spring.
