15/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, in Strasbourg, the EP adopted the report by Luxembourg Christian Democrat Erna Hennicot-Schoepges on the proposal for a regulation on the SESAR programme and the constitution of the joint SESAR industrial project (consultation). Given the forecasts that there will be twice or three times as much air traffic by 2025 and that the current air traffic control system will be fragmented, the EP recalls it is essential that the European air traffic control system, which is the technological chapter of European Open Skies, be realised. The EP has adopted a series of amendments in particular to clarify the definition of the three phases of SESAR (definition until 2007, development from 2008 to 2013, and deployment from 2014 to 2020), to limit the existence of the joint venture to the second phase, and to call on the European Commission to present a legislative proposal establishing the third phase. The EP also hopes that the admission of any new member to the joint project will be approved by itself, as well as by the Council. The EP also wants to attend the joint venture's management board as an observer. (dt).
