09/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 8 November, the EU and Russia held further consultation on human rights. The EU restated its concern about the human rights situation in Russia and in particular in Chechnya, and also covered freedom of the media (including the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya), the situation of NGOs after the entry into force of laws on NGOs, the application of the law to combat extremist activity, respect of rule of law and other matters. Russia recalled its concern about the situation of the Russian minority living in the Baltic States, and especially in Estonia and Latvia (see also EUROPE 9299). Discussions were “constructive and friendly”, a press release from the Finnish Presidency said. The next consultations will be held during the first half of 2007. (hb)
