17/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Last week Eurostat published statistics on the trade in goods between the EU and other regions of the world through different forms of transport, as well as between the EU and neighbouring countries. According to this data, Asia, with trade worth more than €700bn in 2004 and America with almost €550bn are the EU's main trade partners. Although their trade is principally carried out via maritime transport, a significant part of it is also via aviation. On the other hand, trade between the EU and non-EU European countries is mainly by road. Although road transport has been the main mode of transport for exporting goods from the EU to neighbouring countries, maritime transport has been the main form of transport for importing goods from neighbouring countries into the EU.
