EU strongly condemns Korean nuclear test

Luxembourg, 17/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday EU foreign affairs ministers meeting in Luxembourg affirmed that the nuclear test carried out by Pyongyang was a “danger to regional stability” and a “clear threat to peace and international security”. In its conclusions, the Council strongly condemned the test announced by the Democratic Republic of North Korea (DRNK) on 9 October, which did not help the country out of its isolation at all or improve the dire situation of the North Korean people. Faced with the defiance of the Kim Jong II regime, which greeted UN imposed sanctions as a declaration of war, the EU affirmed that it would “implement all the provisions and pertinent resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”, notably resolution 1718 adopted on 14 October and resolution 1695 of 15 July. “The Council will take necessary measures immediately to this end”, explains the text, which calls on the DRNK to immediately resume negotiations with the Six and renounce all existing nuclear weapons or programmes and meet the demands for verification from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On a more general note, “the Council calls for a redoubling of efforts to strengthen all aspects of the international non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction regime”. (ab)
