Pascal Lamy sees no sign of flexibility in agriculture

Brussels, 13/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Addressing the heads of delegation of the 149 WTO member countries meeting in the General Council on 10 October, Pascal Lamy, WTO Director General, said he could see “No visible indications of flexibilities until now” in agriculture, the stumbling block to the Doha negotiations, which have been suspended indefinitely since the end of July. “We can only resume when substantive positions have changed on key problem issues, in particular in the key area of Agriculture which holds the key to unlocking the rest of the agenda,” he said, before going on, “Unless and until it happens, we will remain deadlocked”. “The window of opportunity we have is limited. If we are to have a chance of finishing in 2007, the space to move is somewhere between November and springtime I urge all of you to continue technical work, discreet calculations, private sounding to prepare the ground,” added Mr Lamy, who will meet members of the European Parliament international trade committee in Brussels on Tuesday.
