Brussels, 13/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Official figures of 72 million people living in or at risk of poverty “shows that the EU has failed in reaching the vision of a social Europe,” says the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN), which held its General Assembly in Toledo from 5-7 October. EAPN members called on the EU to “fundamentally re-think its economic and social policy if it is to achieve its stated objective to make a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty by 2010”. Political decision makers at European and national levels should promote social cohesion and include combating poverty among the activities undertaken during the 2007 EU Year of Equal Opportunities, ensure that all asylum and immigration policies fully respect fundamental rights and that security is not forgotten in the flexicurity debate.
