Lyon, 28/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - British Conservative James Elles, president of the European Ideas Network at the EPP-ED group at the European Parliament, which held its summer university on 21-23 September in Lyon (EUROPE 9271, 9272, 9273), made specific mention of the work achieved by the job creation round table in Europe. In a press release Elles explained that “it suggested that the European Commission withdraw the proposed revision of the EU Working Time Directive- currently blocked in the Council of Ministers- and replace it with a genuine health and safety measure addressed specifically at the problem of rest time instead”. The former Secretary General of UNICE, Dirk Hudig, who chaired the round table affirmed, “it is more appropriate to insist in law on a minimum number of hours that people should rest, rather than on a maximum number which they are permitted to work”. He also appealed for a “rest time directive”. The round table requested that during the next reshuffle of the Barroso Commission, a post of Commissioner responsible for the simplification of legislation be set up.
