Strasbourg, 28/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 27 September, the European Parliament registered its opposition to the Council's wish to refuse additional funding in 2006 for unexpected expenditure by adopting the report by Democratici di Sinistra MEP Giovanni Pittella. In its draft amending budget No 3/2006, the European Commission proposed to provide and additional €3.6 million to: - increase the resources (particularly staff) of the European authority monitoring the Galileo joint undertaking; increase staff at the European Aviation Safety Agency and the European Agency for the management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders (FRONTEX); increase funding (translation and interpretation) of the European Data-protection Supervisor. The EP backed the increases proposed by the Commission and rejected the Council's position that requests for increased funding had to be met by redeploying and even reducing some funds. The Council and the EP must now come together to find a compromise on this additional draft budget.
