Commission opens UP way to Bulgaria and Romania's accession in January 2007 but prepares to take safeguard measures if final problems are not resolved in time

Strasbourg, 26/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Bulgaria and Romania are sufficiently prepared to join the European Union on 1st January 2007 but the Commission will not hesitate to take restrictive measures against the two countries in the event of shortcomings - notably in the functioning of the legal system, the fight against corruption and the management of Community aid, if they are not resolved by accession or shortly afterwards.
