EU hopes to conclude agreement on Thursday or Friday

Brussels, 26/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Union considers that, by the end of the week, it will be able to conclude a new agreement with the United States on the transfer of air passenger data, a diplomatic source told EUROPE on Tuesday. Due to the cancellation by the European Court of Justice of the existing agreement between the United States and the EU on 30 May, both parties have until midnight 30 September to reach a new agreement, failing which the airlines could find themselves in legal chaos (EUROPE 9264 and 9268). “Progress has been made” with a view to an agreement, the spokesman for European Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini said on Monday, adding that both parties are aware of the very restricted timetable. The EU's Chief Negotiator, Jonathan Faul is to arrive in Washington on Wednesday to seal the agreement.
