Brussels, 26/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, MEP Marco Cappato (ALDE, Italy) strongly criticises José Manuel Barroso's stance on EU enlargement (see EUROPE 9272 for Mr Barroso's press conference with Mr de Villepin). “After the closing statements on Turkey, President Barroso announced a halt to all further enlargement of the EU after the accession of Romania and Bulgaria. In reality, it is not up to the President of the Commission to draw the borders and to decide how far and to what extent the EU must and can enlarge,” protested Mr Cappato. He asked, “what is the point of Parliamentary votes and resolutions, Council decisions and the reforms undertaken by countries like Turkey, if those who are there to ensure enlargement process goes smoothly derail it?” Parliament ought to censure Mr Barroso and withdraw its confidence in him, “also to relaunch the process of enlargement of the area of freedom and democracy called the European Union towards the Mediterranean,” said Mr Cappato (Italian Radicals support the accession of Israel to the EU: Ed.).
