Brussels, 06/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 4 September the European Parliament's budget committee approved a transfer of a total amount of €50 million in humanitarian aid to the Lebanese people (out of a total, €20 million has already been transferred to respond to the most urgent needs). The funds, managed by the Commission's humanitarian aid directorate general (DG ECHO), cover a whole series of emergency rescue assistance activities, notably the provision of first aid products to displaced persons and medical aid. The Commission has proposed that an Emergency Aid Reserve fund is used because the remainder in the humanitarian aid budget has almost been exhausted and the hurricane season is beginning in the Pacific and Caribbean.
