Strasbourg, 06/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - “All of this is just speculation (...). The Commission has announced nothing yet, not even produced anything", Commissioner Markos Kyprianou told a press conference on Tuesday (our translation throughout), in answer to a question from a journalist on the criticism levelled at his new strategy to fight the harmful effects of alcohol (see EUROPE 9257). The Commission is continuing its work on this dossier and has adopted nothing as yet, he stressed, disappointed at this early lobbying campaign, which he described as appealing to an "incorrect presentation of the facts" and which constituted a "preventative attack" against the Commission's future proposal. He pointed out that the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers had asked the Commission to prepare such a strategy. Based on a "broad consultation", it would provide a "balanced approach". "It will not deal with alcohol as a product, but will focus on the excessive consumption of alcohol and its consequences for health", the Commissioner pointed out, adding that he hoped to present his strategy in the next two months in order for an initial discussion to take place under the Finnish Presidency.
