Strasbourg, 06/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - During their press conferences in Strasbourg on Tuesday, some presidents of political groups expressed concern about developments in Slovakia. Gangs descend on pubs to attack the Hungarian minority, Graham Watson, ALDE President, said with indignation, expressing concern about the Slovakian prime minister's refusal to condemn them. Watson hoped President Barroso would adopt a very firm position at his meeting with the Slovakian prime minister on 7 September. When asked about the activities of the Hungarian far right toward the Slovakian population, he spoke of the graffiti covering the Slovakian Embassy in Budapest, saying: “any government should condemn such action”. Hans-Gert Pöttering, EPP-ED President, was questioned about the opposition shown by Slovakian MEPs to setting up a monitoring group to watch the situation on the ground. “Our group has not yet taken a stance. We stress that the Commission should keep a very vigilant eye on the Slovakian situation”, the German Christian Democrat replied.
