04/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published in view of Tuesday's plenary debate on the report by German Social Democrat Lissy Gröner on the Daphne Programme in the fight against violence 2007-13, Elena Valenciano MEP asked, “if there were one hundred men instead of a hundred women who died at the hands of their partner or ex partner every year, would the level of alarm be the same?” Ms Valenciano underlined that a little over a year since the entry into force of the new Spanish law against “violence of this kind” there had been a considerable increase in the number of reports of acts of violence suffered by women as they felt “supported by legal standards” fighting this kind of violence “on all fronts”. The Spanish Socialist noted that this legislation was the “most courageous and complete” ever implemented in the EU and included the setting up of specialist judges and rehabilitation centres, the improvement of economic support for victims and heavier sentences. Another PSOE MEP, Teresa Riera stated in the same press release that amendments presented by Socialist MEPs to the Gröner report aimed to tackle the trafficking in women and prostitution as a form of violence of this kind and that honour crimes were a violation of fundamental rights.
