06/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has authorised Belgium to finance the construction of transhipment facilities (including transfer stations, sorting sidings and quay walls) in Lanaken, Belgium. The aim of the measure is to revitalise the Lanaken-Maastricht (Netherlands) railway line, which has been closed, to promote cross-border freight transport in the region. Belgian public authorities will retain ownership of the facilities, which will be open to all potential users on equal and non-discriminatory terms. In this context, as neither the operator nor the operator will have an advantage, public support for construction and operation of the transhipment facilities does not constitute State aid, the Commission states, giving its clearance.
