EP supports greater police cooperation during big international sporting events

Strasbourg, 06/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday MEPs adopted a consultation report supporting the initiative proposed in the EU Council by the Netherlands for maintaining order and security and preventing criminal infringements during international events that bring together large numbers of people from several Member States, such as the football World Cup. Currently, cooperation in European police and security services during large international events are mainly based on bilateral international agreements and Article 29 of the EU Treaty, which calls for “common action” in legal and police cooperation in different domains (terrorism, people trafficking, racism and xenophobia, drugs etc.). On the initiative of the Netherlands, supported by Parliament, to make cross-border aid more effective through provisions will be elaborated on a yearly basis by the Council of the EU, which will also be responsible for defining the necessary international assistance for the following civil year. An assessment of the assistance provided during the previous civil year is also planned. In her report, Frieda Brepoels (EPP-ED) supported the initiative, describing it as “justified”. However she stressed that this involved a proposal with “limited ambition. MEPs also adopted an amendment to ensure that any big event, “unexpected or unplanned could at any moment be added to the list of needs established by the Council”.
