06/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 5 July, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health endorsed a proposal to ban the import into the EU of ostriches from two districts of the Western Cape Province of South Africa until 30 October 2006. This decision comes after outbreaks of bird flu in the Mossel Bay and Riversdale Districts. The European Commission says the ban only affects ostriches since these are the only poultry products from South Africa marketed in the EU.
