Brussels, 07/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Coldiretti's conference in Brussels on the future of the EU food market ended on 7 June with a call for a ban of 'immoral food' imports into the EU, produced in ways that pollute the environment, involve child labour and endanger the health of consumers. Paolo Bedoni, President of Coldiretti and Vice-President of COPA (the Committee of Agricultural Organisations in the EU), explained at the conference that the European Union was the world's biggest importer of agri-food products, and Italian agriculture minister Paolo De Castro called for openness from people exporting food to the EU. EU Commissioner Franco Frattini said that the EU cannot accept forms of dumping that exploit children, and said that he would be unveiling an EU Children's Rights Charter in July. The conference participants also slammed the use of prisoners subject to hard labour on tomato farms in China, explains the press release.
