Figel visits Canada to strengthen bilateral relations

Brussels, 06/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Education Commissioner Ján Figel' was in Canada from 4 to 6 June to discuss ways of reinforcing and renewing Europe-Canada cooperation in higher education and vocational training. Talks focused primarily on the forthcoming renewal of the 1995 cooperation agreement and on the identification of innovative cooperative approaches. The renewed agreement will, for the first time, contain a strong youth cooperation component. The programme's core activities are joint curriculum development and student exchanges in a wide range of disciplines, such as International Education Development, Environment and Agriculture, Engineering, Health Science and International Business. More than 200 institutions have already been involved by drawing on their best resources to build transatlantic study programmes, and over 2000 students have benefited from the resulting exchanges. The Commissioner's visit also allowed the review of education policy developments in Canada and the EU, and discussion of the opportunities arising from the Bologna Process.
