EU strategy on globalisation?

Brussels, 06/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Germany, which will hold the rotating Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2007, intends to hold an extraordinary European Council at which EU heads of state and government could adopt an EU strategy on globalisation (Globalisierungsstrategie), according to the Financial Times Deutschland of 6 June. The German daily quotes a document from the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (and former MEP) Joachim Wuermeling, which suggests that the German Presidency will propose a joint strategy for the EU which emphasises the central function of the European Union in the conception and management of globalisation. According to the FTD, the document also suggests creating a new “globalisation” portfolio, which would be the responsibility of one of the European Commission Vice-Presidents. The development of a European strategy on globalisation is sure to have a positive impact on European identity and could also contribute to the creation of a more favourable climate for the European Constitution, says the document, according top the FTD.
