Brussels, 02/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - In the run up to 5 June, World Environment Day, the President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, was keen to recall the role that the EU has to play in this field. He said that, just at a time when the constitutional Treaty seems to have broken down and when European leaders are recommending extension of the reflection period, many of them are also proclaiming that the Union should take concrete action, that it should demonstrate to citizens the reasons of its existence and meet their expectations in order to restore a climate of confidence. The environment is an ideal area of action where Europe must do more and do it better, he pointed out. Environment policy must not be detrimental to the EU's competitiveness, said Mr Borrell, but, on the contrary, provide new opportunities of innovation and jobs with a competitive Europe at world level in the field of environmental technology. He also pointed out that it is not enough to make laws, and went on to state that it is also necessary to ensure decisions taken are put into application. In the field of the environment, this is still far from being the case.
