On 2 June, the European Commission allocated 700,000 euro in emergency humanitarian aid to meet the needs caused by exceptional floods in Suriname. Torrential rains in May have led to many schools, clinics and homes being submerged. More than 20,000 people have been seriously affected. The funds, allocated through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), will cover: - health actions to tackle malaria and diarrhoea in the affected areas; - water and sanitation, as rivers are contaminated; - emergency food supplies following substantial livestock and crop losses; - kitchen sets and hygiene kits. The Commission has already funded rapid response assistance in the immediate aftermath of the floods, sending food parcels and hygiene kits on 14 May.
