For better protection of women during armed conflict

Brussels, 02/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, with the adoption of the report by Belgian MEP Véronique de Keyser (PES) on the situation of women in armed conflicts and their role in the reconstruction and democratic process in post-conflict countries, the European Parliament calls on the Member States to enlarge their programmes for taking in children and adolescents from regions in conflict in order to allow them to escape a world of violence which is often aimed at women in particular. MEPs also call on the EU for better control in the distribution of food, clothing and health/sanitation equipment during emergency operations in order to take the specific requirements of women into account. It should also take measures to protect women within refugee camps in order to reduce the risk of violence and sexual abuse against women and girls, they say. The EP draws attention to the problem of Kamikaze women and stresses that rape as a weapon of war concerns all women - whatever their ethnic, religious and ideological differences. Finally, MEPs stress the positive role played by women in the resolution of conflicts and call on the EU to ensure sufficient technical and financial assistance to support programmes allowing women to take part in peace talks and giving greater powers to women throughout civil society.
