Messrs Barroso and Almunia press Rome to abide by obligations and bring deficit back below 3% by end of 2007

Brussels, 31/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Italy has to fall into line with Council recommendations and bring its public deficit below 3% of GDP by the end of 2007, said Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia in an interview in Wednesday's edition of Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore. “We are simply asking that decisions taken in March are implemented, that is to say a structural adjustment of 0.8 of a point in 2006 and a return to below 3% in 2007,” he said.
