31/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 30 May 2006, on the initiative of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), Bishops and representatives of twelve Episcopalian conferences in the EU met for a study day and an exchange on priorities of the socio-ethical debate in the EU Bishops' Conferences. During a debate on “The Lisbon Strategy and Social Europe”, the Bishops met Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities Commissioner Vladimir Spidla and two members of the European Parliament José Manuel Garcia-Margallo y Marfil (EPP-ED, Spain) and József Szájer (EPP-ED, Hungary). “Whilst respecting the principle of subsidiarity one should work also at the European level to strengthen marriage and family. Specific attention should be given to businesses to accept social responsibility globally,” stresses a COMECE press release. The Bishops also said that unemployment and the integration of migrants remained the biggest problems in most EU Member States.
