Tunis, 30/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Tunisian Human Rights League Congress was marked by a number of incidents during the weekend and it was finally banned. Hélène Flautre MEP (Greens, France), the President of the European Parliament Human Rights Sub-committee had been due to participate at the congress. Members of minority factions, who believe that they had illegally been ousted from leading bodies in the League, called on the police to prevent the Congress being held. This action is totally repudiated by the current leadership of the League and by major human rights organisations (FIDH, AI, REMDH, etc.) and by Ms Flautre. In a press release, Pasqualina Napoletano, Vice President of the Socialist Group stated, “the inadmissible conduct of the Tunisian authorities unavoidably leads us to reconsider our relations” in application of “the clauses (freely signed by the two parties) on human rights and democracy…All the appeals sent by European Socialists to the Tunisian authorities have not been listened to…holding the Congress was prevented in the most reprehensible manner, with intimidation against League activists and observers from a variety of international organisations, as well as diplomatic representatives present”, declared the PES. Relations between the League and the government is one of the subjects Brussels and Tunis discussed. The Commission has not obtained the country's agreement for funding the League under the Euromed democracy initiative. On Monday the Tunisian government said that it regretted the stalemate in the situation at the League but affirmed that it could not interfere in the internal affairs of this association.
