Exchange of views with religious leaders

Brussels, 30/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, and the current President of the European Council, Wolfgang Schüssel, held an exchange of view with high representatives from the main religions in Europe (EUROPE 9197). During a press briefing before the meeting Mr Barroso declared, “It is now very important in Europe and in the rest of the world to speak to others, instead of speaking about others. The dignity of human beings, respect for the difference of others, as well as the freedom of each person, are non-negotiable values”. The exchange of views that we had today demonstrates that dialogue is possible, in respect of other beliefs”. Mr Schüssel said that it was, “important to integrate all the relevant partners to re-establish confidence and trust into the project of the EU. We integrate the social partners in our work for the March Spring Council, and now we anticipate parts of the goals of the Constitutional Treaty, i.e. to have regular dialogue with the leaders of the most important religions in Europe”.
