EU delegation in Kabul under ISAF protection

Brussels, 30/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Under the title, “NATO troops save EU diplomats in Kabul”, a press release from the NATO International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan described the evacuation that took place on Monday afternoon on 29 May, of the European Commission delegation's premises in the Afghan capital, by NATO forces, following riots and shell fire in the city. The intervention of British troops enabled 21 people to be transported, including diplomats, civil servants, a baby and a four year old child to the ISAF HQ. At the request of the baby's mother, troops went out again to search for another four year old in a crèche. At the end of this action, Lieutenant General Richards, ISAF Commander, expressed his satisfaction with the positive result of the operation. The Head of the Commission delegation, Karl Harbo asserted that they were very grateful to the ISAF troops which had “provided assistance and who had brought them there; it's been a hard day”, he said. The curfew was decreed on Monday evening in Kabul, following violent anti-US riots that had shaken the city during the day. Placed on a state of alert, ISAF troops brought their support to the police and Afghan army, via patrols and joint check points.
