Brussels, 23/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Franco Frattini, Vice-President of the European Commission, expressed satisfaction at his visit to Libya on 22 May, during which he met President Gheddafi and a large number of Libyan officials. The aim of the meetings was mainly to discuss matters relating to security and immigration as well as relations between the EU and the African Union (AU). Commissioner Frattini and the Libyan Foreign Minister, Mr Chalgham, agreed that a roadmap should be set in place to strengthen economic and political cooperation between the EU and Libya. Mr Frattini explained to his interlocutors that the EU intended to cooperate with Libya given the latter's strategic position within the African continent, but said that Libya did not intend to be a “border guard for Europe”. We recall that Maltese MEP Simon Busuttil (EPP-ED) had invited the EU to seize this opportunity to intensify cooperation with Libya, especially in the field of immigration (EUROPE 9242).
